Whiteboard Animation

Best whiteboard animation software: 9 tools compared

作者 發布於

TL;DR There is no single best whiteboard animation software; there are two kinds. Video editors (VideoScribe, Doodly, InstaDoodle, Powtoon, Animaker) build a whole video from scenes, a library of drawings, text, voice-over and music. Picture-to-drawing tools (WhiteboardAnimation.ai, SpeedPaint, SpeedPaint in Canva) draw one finished picture you already have, by hand. Golpo AI generates a whole narrated whiteboard video from a prompt or a document. Pick the kind first, then the price: every price below was read on each tool’s own pricing page on 27 October 2026.

The table answers four questions: what you start from (a blank editor, a prompt, or your own picture), what it costs a month, whether you can try it free, and what file you get. The sections below say where each answer comes from.

How we compared them

From each tool’s own pages, on one day, and from our own runs where we have made them. No scores.

  • Prices and plans are what each tool’s own pricing page showed on 27 October 2026, in US dollars. Prices change; the sources at the end link every page we read.
  • Features are what each tool’s own pages and help centre say. Where they say nothing, the table says “not stated” rather than guessing.
  • Same picture, both tools: we ran our water-cycle illustration through VideoScribe’s free trial on 20 October 2026; the VideoScribe comparison shows frames from both. The A1D comparison does the same for A1D. We have not yet run the other tools on this page.
  • We make one of these tools. WhiteboardAnimation.ai is ours; its section says what it does not do, and the last section says when another tool is the better choice.

WhiteboardAnimation.ai: your own picture, drawn by hand

You upload one finished picture — PNG, JPEG or WebP — and a hand draws it: line art first, then colour. You finish the video in your own editor.

  • Price: Free (5 credits, 720p, watermark); Starter $15/month or $12/month billed yearly (50 credits, 1080p, no watermark); Pro $39/month or $29/month billed yearly (200 credits, transparent and layered export, API access, commercial licence). Or 20 credits for $10 with no subscription; any pack removes the watermark and unlocks 1080p for good. One credit draws one picture; exporting is free.
  • After the drawing: change the hand (six, or none), the timing, lines only, or which part is coloured first, without redrawing or spending a credit.
  • Export: MP4 or WebM on paper or a colour; on Pro, transparent WebM, a PNG sequence, or every layer as its own clip; green screen on every plan.
  • For agents: an API and a prompt for Claude Code, Codex or Cursor that draws a folder of pictures (developers).
Example pictures as drawn: the whole clip, and how much of it is line art before the colour starts.

Illustration: script, pictures, drawing clips, edit. WhiteboardAnimation.ai does only the circled step.

What it does not do: no scenes, text, voice-over, music or stock image library; no picture from a text prompt (you bring the picture: how to prepare one); no 4K (up to 1080p or the picture’s own size); saving the video needs a desktop browser.

VideoScribe

A whiteboard video editor: scenes, text, a library of 9,000+ images and icons, voice-over and music on one timeline.

  • Price: per licence, billed annually: Lite $150 a year ($12.50 a month, 5 downloads a month, watermarks on premium images), Core $255 ($21.25, 30 downloads, no watermark, 5M premium images), Max $320 ($26.67, unlimited downloads, reseller rights).
  • Free: a 7-day trial with no card: 3 video downloads, up to 5 minutes, watermarked.
  • Your own picture: a PNG or JPEG is revealed by a diagonal wipe behind the hand; drawing stroke by stroke needs SVG artwork (its help pages).
  • Output: 1080p MP4.
  • Best for: building a whole explainer, start to finish, in one tool. Our VideoScribe comparison runs the same picture through both.

Doodly

A doodle-video editor for Windows and Mac: scenes from its library of characters, props and backgrounds, or your own images, with text, voice-over and music.

  • Price: Standard $49 a month or $490 a year; Enterprise $79 a month or $790 a year, with a larger library, more music and more storage.
  • Free: a 14-day free trial (with Voomly Cloud) and a 30-day money-back guarantee.
  • Your own picture: PNG, JPG, SVG or GIF up to 1920 × 1080, drawn with a wide default path unless you click a custom draw path onto it; its help says SVG gives the best results.
  • Output: MP4, OGG, MKV or WebM, 360p to 1080p, up to 60 fps, no watermark; whiteboard, chalkboard, glass board or your own background.
  • Best for: marketers building whole doodle videos from ready-drawn characters in many poses.

A browser-based doodle-video editor with AI that generates doodle elements and converts pictures to doodles.

  • Price: Standard $47 a month (1080p, 150 AI credits, 8 hands, 1,000+ elements), Pro $67 a month (2K and 4K export, 3,000+ pro elements, commercial licence), Agency $127 a month.
  • Free: no free version or trial; a 60-day money-back guarantee.
  • Your own picture: upload images and convert pictures to doodles.
  • Best for: doodle explainers in any language from a large element library, without installing anything.

Canva (the SpeedPaint app)

Canva’s whiteboard animation is the SpeedPaint app inside the Canva editor: upload an image or a page, choose the sketch duration, hand and sketch type, then animate.

  • Price: Canva Free costs nothing; Canva Pro is $144 a year for one person. Canva says free users get one free SpeedPaint credit and can buy more.
  • Output: the drawing is added to your Canva design, where you add text, transitions and voice-over, and download it as MP4.
  • Best for: people already designing in Canva who want a drawing clip without leaving it.

Powtoon

A video platform whose Whiteboard look gives hundreds of whiteboard templates and hand-drawn style graphics, with AI scripts and text-to-speech.

Doodly vs VideoScribe

Both are whole-video editors with a hand that draws. The differences are where they run, what they cost, and how your own artwork is drawn.

Choose VideoScribe for the lower yearly price and a browser workflow; choose Doodly for its ready-drawn characters and more export formats. If what you want drawn is a picture you already have, neither draws a PNG stroke by stroke without SVG or hand-set paths; a picture-to-drawing tool does. Doodly vs VideoScribe: the same picture in both.

When to pick another tool instead of ours

  • You want the whole video in one app — scenes, captions, voice-over, music: VideoScribe, Doodly, InstaDoodle, Powtoon or Animaker.
  • You have no pictures and no script, only a topic or a document: Golpo AI writes, narrates and draws the whole video.
  • You need 4K: InstaDoodle Pro, or Animaker’s higher plans.
  • You design in Canva: the SpeedPaint app keeps the drawing inside your design.
  • You want a ready-drawn character library rather than your own artwork: Doodly or InstaDoodle.

Pick WhiteboardAnimation.ai when the picture already exists — an illustration, a diagram, an AI image — and you want it drawn line by line, re-timed after the fact, or exported transparent for your own editor. Start with one picture.

FAQ

Questions

It depends on what you start from. To build a whole explainer with scenes, voice-over and music, use an editor: VideoScribe from $150 a year, Doodly from $49 a month, Powtoon from $15 a month billed yearly. To draw a picture you already have, use a picture-to-drawing tool such as WhiteboardAnimation.ai (from $15 a month, or $10 for 20 drawings) or SpeedPaint ($9.99 a month). To generate a narrated video from a document, Golpo AI from $39.99 a month.
Several have free plans or trials, all with limits. Powtoon’s free plan exports 720p with a watermark; Animaker has a free plan; WhiteboardAnimation.ai gives 5 free credits (5 drawings, 720p, watermarked); Canva’s free users get one SpeedPaint credit; VideoScribe has a 7-day trial with 3 watermarked downloads; Doodly a 14-day trial. InstaDoodle has no free version.
Powtoon and Animaker have free plans, and WhiteboardAnimation.ai starts with 5 free credits. None is a full replacement for free: Powtoon’s free videos are 720p and watermarked, and WhiteboardAnimation.ai draws your own picture rather than building scenes, so you finish the video in a free editor such as CapCut or DaVinci Resolve.
For the same whole-video workflow: Doodly (desktop, from $49 a month), InstaDoodle (browser, from $47 a month), Powtoon (from $15 a month billed yearly) and Animaker (from $10 a month). For drawing your own picture stroke by stroke, which VideoScribe only does for SVG artwork: WhiteboardAnimation.ai or SpeedPaint.
VideoScribe is the closest editor and costs less per year ($150 to $320 against $490). InstaDoodle runs in the browser instead of on desktop. If you want your own picture drawn without setting draw paths, WhiteboardAnimation.ai works out the strokes from a PNG, JPEG or WebP itself.
Among the tools here, WhiteboardAnimation.ai sells credit packs without a subscription (20 drawings for $10, lasting 90 days, which also remove the watermark and unlock 1080p), and Golpo AI sells pay-as-you-go credits with no subscription (one credit is one minute of video, down to $3.99 a credit at volume). The others are monthly or yearly plans.
