The prompt behind the picture

Image prompt
Hand-drawn diagram of weathering and erosion: on the left a tall rocky cliff with cracks, rain falling on it and curved wind lines blowing against it, broken rocks and pebbles at its foot, a river carrying the pebbles and sand downhill to the right, and a fan of sandy sediment where the river meets the sea. Coloured pencil and watercolour marker, clean black ink outlines, warm off-white paper, no text.

The picture came from an image model; any finished illustration works the same way, including one you drew. Use the prompt as a starting point for your own topic.

Weathering and erosion, step by step

A script to read over it, timed to the drawing: the lines go down first and the colour arrives on the last beat.

  1. 0:00Line artEven the hardest rock doesn’t last forever. Slowly, the weather wears it away.
  2. 0:23Rain and ice get into cracks in the cliff and split the rock apart. Breaking rock into pieces is called weathering.
  3. 0:46Wind blows against the rock too, and over many years the cliff crumbles.
  4. 1:09Broken rocks and pebbles tumble down to the bottom of the cliff.
  5. 1:32ColourA river picks them up and carries them away. Moving rock and soil to a new place is called erosion.
  6. 1:57Where the river meets the sea, it drops the sand and pebbles, and they slowly build new land.

Where this weathering and erosion animation fits

Use it in an earth science lesson to show the difference between weathering and erosion, to start a topic on rocks, rivers and landforms, or as a short clip in a geography video. The same process turns your own diagram into a clip.
