The prompt behind the picture

Image prompt
Hand-drawn cut-away side view of one wooden compost bin made of horizontal planks, with the front cut open to show three clear layers inside: the top layer is fresh green and colourful kitchen scraps (lettuce leaves, a banana peel, apple cores, carrot tops); the middle layer is brown, half-rotted leaves and scraps breaking down; the bottom layer is dark, crumbly black soil. Exactly two pink earthworms wriggle inside the layers. Only the bin, the three layers and the two worms. Nothing else in the picture, plenty of empty space around the bin. Coloured pencil and watercolour marker, clean black ink outlines, warm off-white paper, no text.

The picture came from an image model; any finished illustration works the same way, including one you drew. Use the prompt as a starting point for your own topic.

How this clip was made

The picture above was made with an image model from the prompt above; WhiteboardAnimation.ai then drew it, stroke by stroke, as the clip at the top of this page.

Notes from making it

The narration was checked against Britannica’s article on compost.

Composting, step by step

A script to read over it, timed to the drawing: the lines go down first and the colour arrives on the last beat.

  1. 0:00Line artComposting turns kitchen scraps and garden waste into compost, a dark, crumbly mix that is good for soil.
  2. 0:28On top are fresh scraps: lettuce leaves, a banana peel, apple cores and carrot tops.
  3. 0:57In the middle, older scraps and leaves are rotting, so they turn brown and soft. Mixing the pile every few days lets in air, which the rotting needs.
  4. 1:25ColourEarthworms help too. They eat scraps, and their droppings, called castings, are rich food for the soil.
  5. 1:54At the bottom is finished compost. Mixed into a garden, it gives plants nutrients and helps the soil hold water.

Where this composting animation fits

Use it in a science lesson on how things rot, before starting a class compost bin, or as a short clip in a nature video for kids. The same process turns your own diagram into a clip.
