The prompt behind the picture

Image prompt
Hand-drawn energy pyramid: one large triangle pyramid divided by horizontal lines into exactly four stacked layers, widest at the bottom and smallest at the top. Bottom layer, light green: a clump of green grass. Second layer, yellow: one small brown mouse. Third layer, orange: one green snake coiled up. Top layer, the small tip, light blue: one brown hawk. Exactly one kind of living thing in each layer, each drawn small enough to fit inside its own layer. Nothing else in the picture, plenty of empty space around the pyramid. Coloured pencil and watercolour marker, clean black ink outlines, warm off-white paper, no text.

The picture came from an image model; any finished illustration works the same way, including one you drew. Use the prompt as a starting point for your own topic.

How this clip was made

The picture above was made with an image model from the prompt above; WhiteboardAnimation.ai then drew it, stroke by stroke, as the clip at the top of this page.

Notes from making it

The first picture put a fox right below the hawk. Hawks don’t hunt foxes, so we made a new picture with grass, a mouse, a snake and a hawk. The narration follows National Geographic Education’s pages on energy flow and food chains.

Energy pyramid, step by step

A script to read over it, timed to the drawing: the lines go down first and the colour arrives on the last beat.

  1. 0:00Line artAn energy pyramid shows how energy moves from one living thing to the next.
  2. 0:04At the bottom are the producers, like grass. They use sunlight to make their own food.
  3. 0:08Next come the plant eaters, called primary consumers. Here a mouse feeds on the grass.
  4. 0:13ColourHigher up are animals that eat other animals: a snake eats the mouse, and at the top a hawk eats the snake.
  5. 0:17At each step up, only about 10 percent of the energy is passed on, and most of the rest is lost as heat. That’s why the pyramid gets smaller toward the top.

Where this energy pyramid animation fits

Use it in a science lesson on food chains and ecosystems, to introduce producers and consumers, or as a short clip in a nature video for kids. The same process turns your own diagram into a clip.
