The prompt behind the picture

Image prompt
Hand-drawn food chain from left to right in one straight row, joined by red arrows that all point to the right: far left, a bright yellow sun; then a clump of green grass; then one brown rabbit eating; then one red fox. Exactly three red arrows: from the sun to the grass, from the grass to the rabbit, from the rabbit to the fox. Each arrow points from the thing that is eaten towards the animal that eats it. Only these four things in one row. Nothing else in the picture, plenty of empty space above and below. Coloured pencil and watercolour marker, clean black ink outlines, warm off-white paper, no text.

The picture came from an image model; any finished illustration works the same way, including one you drew. Use the prompt as a starting point for your own topic.

How this clip was made

The picture above was made with an image model from the prompt above; WhiteboardAnimation.ai then drew it, stroke by stroke, as the clip at the top of this page.

Notes from making it

The picture follows the grass, rabbit and fox example in National Geographic Education’s article on food chains, which the narration was checked against. A hawk planned for the sky was left out, so every animal in the picture is a link in the chain.

Food chain, step by step

A script to read over it, timed to the drawing: the lines go down first and the colour arrives on the last beat.

  1. 0:00Line artA food chain shows who eats whom, and the path energy takes from one living thing to the next.
  2. 0:05It starts with the sun. Grass makes its own food from sunlight, so it is called a producer.
  3. 0:10A rabbit eats the grass. Animals that eat plants are called herbivores, or primary consumers.
  4. 0:15A fox eats the rabbit. It is a secondary consumer, because it eats a plant-eater.
  5. 0:20ColourEach arrow points from the food to the one that eats it, the way the energy moves.
  6. 0:25When the fox dies, bacteria break down its body and return nutrients to the soil for new grass. Many food chains linked together make a food web.

Where this food chain animation fits

Use it in a science lesson on ecosystems, before building a food web as a class, or as a short clip in a nature video for kids. The same process turns your own diagram into a clip.
