The prompt behind the picture

Image prompt
Hand-drawn cross-section of one cone-shaped volcano cut in half to show its inside: deep underground at the bottom, a large glowing red-orange magma chamber; one narrow central pipe (the vent) of red magma rises from the chamber straight up through brown and grey rock layers to the bowl-shaped crater at the top. A big dark grey cloud of ash puffs up out of the crater into the sky. Down one side of the mountain flows one bright orange river of lava. Only these things: the rock layers, the magma chamber, the vent, the crater, the ash cloud and the lava flow. Nothing else in the picture, plenty of empty sky. Coloured pencil and watercolour marker, clean black ink outlines, warm off-white paper, no text.

The picture came from an image model; any finished illustration works the same way, including one you drew. Use the prompt as a starting point for your own topic.

How this clip was made

The picture above was made with an image model from the prompt above; WhiteboardAnimation.ai then drew it, stroke by stroke, as the clip at the top of this page.

Notes from making it

The narration was checked against National Geographic Education’s encyclopedic entry on volcanoes.

Volcano, step by step

A script to read over it, timed to the drawing: the lines go down first and the colour arrives on the last beat.

  1. 0:00Line artA volcano is an opening in Earth’s crust where melted rock, hot gases and ash can burst out.
  2. 0:16Deep inside is the magma chamber, where hot melted rock called magma collects.
  3. 0:32Pressure builds up in the chamber and pushes the magma up through a channel in the rock to the opening at the top.
  4. 0:48Once magma flows out onto the surface, it is called lava. Here a river of lava runs down the side of the mountain.
  5. 1:04ColourSome eruptions are explosive and send a cloud of ash into the sky. Others are just a slow flow of lava.
  6. 1:20Each eruption leaves new layers of rock and ash, and that is how a volcano builds up into a hill or a mountain.

Where this volcano diagram animation fits

Use it in an earth science lesson on volcanoes, before a model volcano experiment, or as a short clip in a geography video for kids. The same process turns your own diagram into a clip.
