The prompt behind the picture

Image prompt
A friendly children's textbook illustration of a homemade electromagnet for a school magnetism lesson. A large iron nail lies flat and horizontal, with copper wire coiled neatly around its middle. A single round battery lies on its side below the nail. The copper wire makes a complete loop: one end of the coil goes to the bump on the left end of the battery and the other end of the coil goes to the flat right end of the battery, so there are exactly two wires between the coil and the battery. Three small paper clips are stuck to the pointed end of the nail by magnetism. Simple, cute and educational, only the nail, coil, battery and three paper clips, nothing else. Lots of empty space, 4:3. Coloured pencil and watercolour marker, clean black ink outlines, warm off-white paper, no text.

The picture came from an image model; any finished illustration works the same way, including one you drew. Use the prompt as a starting point for your own topic.

How this clip was made

The picture above was made with an image model from the prompt above; WhiteboardAnimation.ai then drew it, stroke by stroke, as the clip at the top of this page.

Notes from making it

The first picture joined only one end of the wire to the battery, so the circuit was not complete; it was made again with both ends of the coil connected. The narration was checked against Britannica’s article on electromagnets.

Electromagnet, step by step

A script to read over it, timed to the drawing: the lines go down first and the colour arrives on the last beat.

  1. 0:00Line artAn electromagnet is a magnet that you can switch on and off with electricity.
  2. 0:07It starts with an iron nail. Iron is a magnetic material, so it can be turned into a magnet.
  3. 0:13Copper wire is wound around the nail again and again to make a coil.
  4. 0:20Both ends of the wire are joined to the battery, so an electric current can flow all the way round the coil.
  5. 0:26ColourThe current flowing through the coil turns the nail into a magnet, and the nail picks up the paper clips.
  6. 0:33Take one wire off the battery and the current stops. The magnet switches off.

Where this electromagnet animation fits

Use it in a physics lesson on magnetism and electric circuits, before the class builds its own electromagnet, or as a short clip in a science video for kids. The same process turns your own diagram into a clip.

About this example

Pro includes a commercial licence: use your whiteboard animation clips in client work, explainer videos, ads and paid courses. Free and Starter clips are for personal and non-commercial use.
One finished picture — PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 10 MB. Illustrations, diagrams and flat artwork work best: the kind of picture a doodle video or explainer video is built from.
About fifteen seconds before your hand-drawn animation starts to draw. The video is as long as you choose, and saving it takes a few seconds more.
