Whiteboard animation in Canva: what it draws, and an alternative
Yes, you can make a whiteboard animation in Canva, but not with Canva’s own animations: its Sketch effect uncovers the finished picture in under two seconds, with no hand and no lines drawn. The hand-drawn kind comes from SpeedPaint, a separate app inside Canva, which gave our free account one credit: a pencil hand outlined our picture, a brush painted it, and the 22-second clip had no watermark. Pick Canva with SpeedPaint when the drawing is one part of a Canva design. Pick us to draw many pictures from free credits or a one-off pack, to change the order, timing or hand after the drawing without rendering again, or to export transparent or layered clips for your editor.
The same picture in both
On 31 October 2026 we made a free Canva account (no trial, no card), opened a 1920 × 1080 video design and placed our water-cycle illustration — the same 724 × 543 PNG — at 1440 × 1080 in the middle. In the SpeedPaint app we connected a new SpeedPaint account, which showed 1 credit, and changed two defaults to match our run on SpeedPaint’s own site on 29 October: Hand 2 instead of no hand, and a 10-second colour fill instead of 0. Sketch stayed at 10 seconds, 60 fps, Color sketch type, white background, drawing order Auto. About a minute after Animate image, a 22-second clip landed in the design and the account showed 0 credits. We downloaded the design from Canva as a 1080p MP4, with no watermark. The frames below are from that file at a quarter, half, three quarters and the end of the drawing, cropped to the picture, beside our clip of the same picture at the same points.
A pencil hand draws the outlines in the picture’s own line colours, part by part from the top: the cloud and rain, the mountain, river and sea, then the small clouds, the sun and its arrows. A second hand with a paintbrush then paints the colour in, and the cream paper comes back last; until then the background is plain white. It drew the picture the way SpeedPaint’s own site did in our paid run of 29 October.
The hand traces the outlines first — cloud, mountain, river, arrows — and the colour comes after, region by region, as if someone drew it. Watch the full water cycle animation

Feature by feature
| Compared | Canva | WhiteboardAnimation.ai |
|---|---|---|
| Price | Canva Free $0; Canva Pro US$144 a year for one person; Business US$250 a year per person (pricing page, 31 October 2026). SpeedPaint is billed by speedpaint.co, not Canva: Basic $9.99 a month, Standard $14.99 a month or $3.99 a month billed yearly, both with unlimited credits (its pricing page, 31 October). | Free to start; Starter and Pro monthly or yearly, or a one-off credit pack. One credit draws one picture. Current prices are on the pricing page. |
| Free option | Canva Free, no card. Canva says free users get one SpeedPaint credit: on 31 October 2026 the app asked us to connect a SpeedPaint account, then showed 1 credit, and our one video used it. Canva’s own animations, Sketch included, downloaded as a 1080p MP4 with no watermark. | 5 free credits on sign-up, no card; free exports are 720p with a watermark. |
| What you start from | A Canva design. SpeedPaint takes an image you upload or select in the design; Canva’s animations apply to any element. | One finished picture: PNG, JPEG or WebP, up to 10 MB. It does not generate pictures from text. |
| How the picture is drawn | SpeedPaint: in our run a pencil hand drew the outlines part by part, then a brush hand painted the colour in; the colour pass needs a Color fill duration above 0 s, its default. Canva’s own Sketch animation is a reveal: the finished, coloured picture is uncovered from left to right behind a ragged edge, with no lines drawn and no hand. | Drawn stroke by stroke from the picture itself: outlines first, then colour region by region. |
| Drawing order and style | SpeedPaint, before it renders: a Drawing order setting (Auto by default), colour, grey or black-and-white sketch, background, sketch noise reduction, fade-out and sketching sequences. Canva’s animations: on enter, on exit or both, and their timing on the page. | Lines only, or lines then colour; the subject or the background coloured first; and on the timeline, any layer’s lines or colour in any order. Each change replays at once: no redraw, no credit. |
| Hand | SpeedPaint: a row of hand styles, the first of them no hand (the default); a brush hand paints the colour. Canva’s own animations have no hand. | Six hands, or none. Switching hands never redraws or spends a credit. |
| Output | SpeedPaint drops its clip into your design as a video element (22 seconds for 10 s of sketch and 10 s of colour, 4:3 for our 4:3 picture). You download the design from Canva: our free account downloaded 1080p MP4s with no watermark. | MP4, WebM or a PNG sequence, up to 1080p, in the picture’s shape or 16:9, 1:1 or 9:16, on paper or any colour, such as a green screen; transparent WebM or PNG frames, and one transparent clip per layer, subject and background apart, on Pro. |
| Changes after drawing | Text, music, transitions and timing are edited in Canva around the clip. To change the drawing itself — order, hand or durations — you animate again in SpeedPaint: our one free credit went to 0 after the first render, which took about a minute. | After the drawing: reorder, trim and re-time its line and colour clips on a timeline, with no redraw and no credit. No text, scenes or voice-over: you finish the video in your own editor. |
| Best for | Social posts, ads and slides you already design in Canva, when a drawing is one element of them. | Turning illustrations you already have into drawing clips for your own edit, or from an AI assistant through the MCP server. |
Canva’s own Sketch animation, same picture
Canva’s Animate panel has no drawing effect of its own. Its Reveal group — Brush, Ink, Digital, Spray Paint, Sketch and Gradient — uncovers an element; choosing a Sketch style other than the default is marked Pro. On the same free account and the same picture we applied Sketch with its defaults (on enter, Fill) and downloaded a 5-second 1080p MP4 with no watermark. The frames are at a quarter, half, three quarters and the end of the animation, which is over in about 1.8 seconds.
The finished, coloured picture is uncovered from left to right behind a torn-paper edge in under two seconds. No outline is drawn first, and there is no hand. Our clip of the same picture
What each costs
Canva Free costs nothing; on 31 October 2026 its pricing page listed Canva Pro at US$144 a year for one person and Business at US$250 a year per person. On 31 October SpeedPaint’s pricing page listed Basic at $9.99 a month (one basic hand, black-and-white sketch, up to 15 s of sketch and 15 s of colour) and Standard at $14.99 a month or $3.99 a month billed yearly (eight hands, colour sketch, up to 50 s and 50 s), both with unlimited credits.

When Canva may be the better choice
- You already design in Canva, and the drawing is one element of a post, ad or slide deck.
- You want the text, music, transitions and download in the same editor.
- You need one hand-drawn clip: the free SpeedPaint credit covers one video.
- A quick reveal is enough: Canva’s Sketch, Brush and Ink animations are free and take a second or two.
Using both, or moving over
- Upload the same picture you used in Canva, as a PNG, JPEG or WebP; every picture is its own clip.
- Export the clip in 16:9, 1:1 or 9:16 to match a YouTube or Facebook ad, then upload it to your Canva design as a video, or to any editor.
- Change the hand, lines only, or which part is coloured first after the drawing: none of it redraws or spends a credit.
