Whiteboard Animation

Vyond and Powtoon alternative: draw your picture, not reveal it

Vyond and Powtoon build whole animated videos — characters, scenes, text, voice-over — and both have a whiteboard look. Their hand effects do not draw your picture, though: on 1 November 2026 we gave each our water-cycle PNG, and in both a filmed hand with a marker crossed the frame while the finished, coloured picture was uncovered behind it, with no outlines drawn first. WhiteboardAnimation.ai does a smaller job: it draws a finished picture you already have stroke by stroke, outlines first and then colour, and you add the script, voice-over and scenes in your own editor. Pick Vyond or Powtoon to build the whole video from their libraries; pick us when the picture exists and you want it drawn line by line.

The same picture in Vyond

On 1 November 2026 we signed up for Vyond’s free trial by email (no card asked), started a blank 16:9 video, uploaded our water-cycle illustration — the same 724 × 543 PNG — and placed it in the middle of the scene at full height. We gave it the Enter Effect “Whiteboard - Real Hand” from the Whiteboard Animation group and set its duration from the default 1 second to 10 seconds, with the scene at 12 seconds. The trial cannot download, so the frames below were taken from Vyond’s own preview at a quarter, half, three quarters and the end of the effect, cropped to the picture, beside our clip of the same picture at the same points.

VyondVyond (free trial, Whiteboard - Real Hand, 10 s)
Vyond whiteboard hand effect: four frames of a real hand with a marker uncovering the finished, coloured water-cycle picture diagonally behind a ragged edge, under a Vyond free trial watermark

A filmed hand holding a black marker moves from the top left to the bottom right. Behind it the finished picture appears in full colour, cream paper included, behind a torn-paper edge: cloud and arrow first, then the mountain, river and sun, the sea last. No outline is drawn before the colour, and the strokes do not follow the lines of the picture. The trial’s “Vyond free trial” watermark sits over the middle of the scene.

How your picture is drawnVyond’s Enter Effect “Whiteboard - Real Hand” (our run, duration set to 10 s): a filmed hand with a marker sweeps from the top left to the bottom right and the finished, coloured picture — paper background included — is uncovered behind a ragged edge. Powtoon’s Drawing effect “Hand 01” did the same in about 2.7 seconds, its default length. Neither drew an outline first.Drawn stroke by stroke from the picture itself: outlines first, then colour region by region.
HandVyond’s Whiteboard Animation effects: two illustrated hands, five real hands, Pen Only and Writing Only. Powtoon’s Drawing effects: no hand, Hand 01, 02, 03 and one more hand.Six hands, or none. Switching hands never redraws or spends a credit.
OutputVyond on a plan: MP4 at 1080p, GIF, transparent-background WebM and GIF, in 16:9, 9:16, 1:1 or custom; SCORM only on Enterprise and Agency. EditingFull video editors: scenes, characters, text, music and voice-over on a timeline. An effect’s delay and duration can be changed and previewed again; a download is rendered (Powtoon’s took about 3 minutes and arrived by email). After the drawing: reorder, trim and re-time its line and colour clips on a timeline, with no redraw and no credit. No text, scenes or voice-over: you finish the video in your own editor.

Powtoon, same picture

On 1 November 2026 we made a Powtoon account by email, which started a 7-day Pro trial with no card. We chose the Whiteboard look and a blank 16:9 slide, uploaded the same PNG, and gave it the Drawing enter effect “Hand 01” at its default length. At export we kept the Powtoon watermark: the MP4 came by email about 3 minutes later, 1280 × 720 at 25 fps. The frames are at a quarter, half, three quarters and the end of the effect, cropped to the picture.

Which one to choose

When Vyond or Powtoon may be the better choice

  • You are building the whole video — characters, scenes, text and voice-over — in one tool, from templates or a library.
  • You want animated characters in a whiteboard style, or AI tools that turn a script, document or prompt into a first draft.
  • You need a team workspace, an LMS package (Vyond’s SCORM export, Enterprise and Agency only) or transparent WebM from the same editor.
  • A quick reveal of the finished picture behind a hand is enough for the scene.

Using both, or moving over

  1. Upload the picture you want drawn — your own illustration, a diagram, or a still from your video — as a PNG, JPEG or WebP; every picture is its own clip.
  2. Export the drawing as MP4, or as a transparent clip on Pro, and place it in your Vyond or Powtoon scene as an uploaded video, or in any editor.
  3. Change the hand, lines only, or which part is coloured first after the drawing: none of it redraws or spends a credit.

Questions

Questions people ask

It depends on what you start from. To build a whole whiteboard video from a library of drawings, with scenes and voice-over, look at the dedicated whiteboard editors, VideoScribe and Doodly. If you already have the picture, WhiteboardAnimation.ai draws it stroke by stroke, outlines first and then colour, and you finish the video in your own editor. In our test on 1 November 2026, Vyond’s and Powtoon’s hand effects uncovered the finished picture behind a moving hand instead of drawing it.
Not in our test. Its “Whiteboard - Real Hand” effect moved a filmed hand across our PNG and uncovered the finished, coloured picture behind it, with no outlines drawn first. Vyond’s Whiteboard Animation group has nine such effects; we ran one.
No. Vyond’s help says free trials include no video downloads and watermark every video, up to 3 videos; when we pressed Download in the trial on 1 November 2026, it offered a first week of Professional for US$10, followed by the monthly rate.
Yes: Powtoon’s pricing page lists the free plan at 720p, up to 3 minutes, with the Powtoon watermark. Our MP4 with the watermark kept carried a “Created using Powtoon” badge and a short Powtoon ending.
Yes. A new account on the whiteboard animation maker starts with 5 free credits, and one credit draws one picture. Free exports carry a watermark and are at most 720p. Buying any credit pack lifts both limits for good. Paid plans add credits every month, and credit packs last 90 days.
Yes. Credit packs are one-time purchases, with no subscription and nothing that renews: 20 credits for $10, 60 credits for $25, or 150 credits for $50. One credit draws one picture, pack credits last 90 days, and any pack removes the watermark and unlocks 1080p for good. To buy one, sign in, open Buy credits in Studio and pay through Stripe Checkout. Transparent export, the API and the commercial licence come with the Pro plan.
Pro includes a commercial licence: use your whiteboard animation clips in client work, explainer videos, ads and paid courses. Free and Starter clips are for personal and non-commercial use.
